Apple announced some cool stuff during the month of March. Here are some of our favorites:
The new iPad Air and the updated iPad mini have more in common than not. They both advertise up to 10 hours of battery life, an 8-megapixel back camera and 7-megapixel front camera. Both support the first-generation Apple Pencil and True Tone technology, making it easier to see your screen whether you’re in the bright sun or your bedroom at night. They are both 6.1 mm thin.
Here’s where they start to differentiate. The iPad Air has a 10.5” retina display, while the iPad Mini only has a 7.9” retina display. Because the Air is larger, it weighs around 150 grams more than the Mini. Additionally, the iPad Air has a slightly faster processing speed and is compatible with Apple’s Smart Keyboard, while the iPad Mini is not. Prices start at $499 for the iPad Air and $399 for the iPad Mini.
If you’re getting a new iPad, you can use it to play on the new Apple Arcade. This all new gaming service is coming to the app store in the fall of 2019. Apple Arcade will be a subscription based service with over 100 games to choose from. It is compatible with iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple TV’s. One subscription covers up to six family members and the games can be played both online and offline. No need to worry about the kiddos spending money, as there are no in-app purchases or ads.
Apple Pay can be used to buy your new Apple Arcade app, but what about purchases elsewhere? To bridge the gap, Apple recently announced the all new Apple Card. It is a credit card that boasts lower interest rates, higher security and cash back daily. If you have any questions, you can send Apple a text and get quick responses. Credit card charges will be tracked on a map so you can see at a glance where your spending is from. Lastly, charges are broken down by color into categories like Food/Drink, Entertainment, etc. An exact release date has not been announced, but it is expected sometime this summer.
Coming this fall is Apple TV+. This new streaming service is a direct competitor to other streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and HBO. It will be available exclusively on the Apple TV app and features a number or originals shows and movies. Many celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Jason Momoa and more will star in the productions. If you’re interested in seeing the show premieres, you can sign up on their website here.
Apple also unveiled Apple News+ as an enhanced version of Apple News. For $9.99 per month, you’ll have access to hundreds of magazines and newspapers both online and offline. All current features of Apple News are also included. On-device intelligence is used so stories will be recommended to you without advertisers and publishers being able to track you. An Apple+ subscription is good for up to six family members.
