How to Use an Apple Watch to Track Your Fitness Journey

Some of the most important habits to build are those related to overall health. Improving your fitness and increasing exercise can lead to less stress, fewer health problems, and overall improved happiness. However, fitness isn’t limited to hitting the gym a couple of times a week. Total body fitness includes eating healthy, exercising regularly, practicing mental wellness, keeping a good sleep schedule, and more. Improving all of these areas of your life may seem daunting. Apple Watch has features that help you improve many of these areas of your life to help track your fitness journey.

Apple Watch is more than an extension of your iPhone. It has many built-in features and apps to track your fitness routine and motivate you to work out more often. Your watch will track your activity with three rings:
  • Move Ring: tracks calories burned and can be adjusted to your specific goals.
  • Exercise Ring: follows how much you exercise, with the goal being 30 minutes a day.
  • Stand Ring: tracks how many hours a day you spend time standing, and the goal is to spend time standing 12 hours a day.
Users should try their best to close these rings each day. Over time, the Activity app will put together long-term trends and data to show your progress.
The Workouts app tracks fitness. It will detect when you start a workout, or you can select one of 12 workouts in the app to manually start your fitness tracking. Then it’ll track your exercise and show stats like time elapsed, distance traveled, pace, heart rate, and calories burned. In addition, if you’re running, you can set a pace, and the watch will tell you if you’re going too fast or slow.

The Apple Watch integrates with your phone’s Alarm system to help set up a bed routine that works for you. You can customize your sleep schedule, so all your Apple devices go into a Sleep focused mode when you are meant to go to sleep, so no notifications distract you. Then, when it’s time to wake up, your Apple Watch will play an alarm and tap you to get up.
Go to the Health app on your iPhone, navigate to Trends and select Sleep. This page will show you the average amount of sleep you get each night versus how long you stay in bed. It also shows your heart rate while sleeping, breaths per minute, and more. From here, you can customize your sleep schedule as well.

Watching out for your health is an important part of a fitness journey. The Apple Watch has features to monitor your blood oxygen levels and heart rate. If the Apple Watch detects an abnormally low or high heart rate for more than 10 minutes, it will notify you in case it’s due to an underlying issue. In addition, if you have an Apple Watch Series 4 or later, except for the Apple Watch SE, you can download the ECG app and take electrocardiograms from your watch to monitor your heart health.

Mental Wellbeing

Guided breathing and mindfulness have proven to lower stress, and high stress can lead to many health problems. The Apple Watch can send you notifications to practice deep breathing. Customize how many notifications you want per day and how many breaths you want to take per minute. Or, head to the Mindfulness app on your watch to do a 1-minute breathing exercise.
If you’re an Apple Fitness+ subscriber, you can access guided meditations and yoga. These exercises can improve mindfulness, flexibility, decrease stress and anxiety, and improve your physical and mental well-being.
