A variety of brands, such as Apple, Samsung, and LG, have wormed their way into our everyday lexicon, to the point that we forget that other names exist within the vast technology sector.
The ultimate example?
OnePlus, which has managed to fly under the radar while producing fantastic devices that rival the iPhones and Galaxy smartphones that dominate the industry.
Now, OnePlus promises to excite tech lovers yet again with the potential release of a new tablet. What do we know so far about this hotly anticipated device? Keep reading to find out.
OnePlus Tablet Potential
Never content to let the story come to them,
digital detectives love scouring trademark filings in search of exciting hints of what’s to come. In early 2021, these dedicated folks stumbled upon a European Union trademark for the OnePlus Pad.
While this does not necessarily mean that such a product exists — or is even being developed — it’s enough to raise the eyebrows of more than a few fans of OnePlus products. While it’s possible that the company is simply snatching up trademarks in hopes of keeping potential names safe, OnePlus enthusiasts claim that such a scenario is unlikely.
Another argument in favor of a new tablet: the significant diversification of the OnePlus lineup in the past few years. At this point, introducing a tablet is the next logical step for the company.
Why Get Excited?
If you’re the kind of tech consumer who only shops for Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, or Google devices, you’ve been missing out on a lot of
great design and innovation. For example, the
OnePlus 9 Pro smartphone rivals anything currently on the market. Highlights include its gorgeous AMOLED screen and an incredible camera capable of jaw-dropping photos. Meanwhile, the budget-friendly OnePlus Nord line of phones provides the perfect combination of performance and price.
Extra competition is great for consumers, and, with another heavyweight in the fight, shoppers stand to benefit. Now, it’s just a matter of who OnePlus is looking to knock out with their rumored tablet.
Who Is the OnePlus Tablet Competing Against?
Several different tiers of tablets are currently available. These encompass a wide range of prices and performance levels. At the very top, of course, is Apple, which has
dominated the tablet market since essentially inventing it back in 2010. While this wasn’t the first company to introduce the world to tablet computing, Apple certainly made it a mass-market success.
Is OnePlus looking to knock the king off its throne? It’s possible, considering the company’s strategy of making devices available at several different price points. Even more likely, however, is the launch of several different OnePlus Pad models, ranging in price from over $1,000 to as low as a few hundred bucks.
At the reverse end of the premium tablet spectrum is Amazon’s Fire lineup, which offers a bargain-basement $49 model as well as several devices designed exclusively for kids. It’s unlikely that OnePlus has any plans to produce a kid-centric tablet, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the company markets a device that can compete with the rock-bottom prices offered by Amazon.
What If This Never Happens?
While it’s technically possible that all these rumors won’t amount to a thing, it’s doubtful. Yes, companies do file bogus or phony trademarks from time to time. This can occur for a variety of reasons, be it squatting on product names or simply throwing competing companies for a loop. That being said, OnePlus is an
emerging name in the consumer electronics world — so these reasons don’t hold up under scrutiny.
It’s only a matter of time before OnePlus unveils a new product. At this point, the odds are high that it’s going to be a tablet device. Until then, we’ll continue to appreciate all that makes the underappreciated OnePlus line of devices special.
