Microsoft may have been a latecomer to the console scene, but since the introduction of the original Xbox in 2001, the company has quickly grown to become a leader in the space. With top tier hardware that could compete head to head with the latest Sony console, Xbox has a lot to offer (and still does).
While the Xbox One didn’t fare quite as well against its PlayStation rival, we’re about to see the next generation rival between the
Xbox Series X and the
PlayStation 5. As awesome of an experience as Xbox gaming can be, there are plenty of things that can go wrong with an Xbox console.
Are you experiencing Xbox issues? We outlined the top problems that plague Xbox owners, plus suggested solutions.
By the way, if you’re concerned about encountering one of these common Xbox problems, there’s a great way to get protected. With an
extended console warranty protecting your Xbox, you will be covered.
Kinect Won’t Pair with Console
The
Kinect is a pretty awesome accessory for the Xbox, enabling video, audio and motion control. And once it’s set up, this accessory usually just works every time. It can be frustrating, though, when your Kinect doesn’t seem to be working properly.
The first step is to ensure that this device is enabled in your Xbox settings. You can find Kinect settings under the all settings section of the menu. If everything looks good there, you may need to recalibrate the entire device.
If your console isn’t recognizing your Kinect at all, there are a few steps to try. First, make sure the connect is actually plugged in to the console. Then try resetting both the Kinect and the Xbox. You simply need to unplug the Kinect to restart it, and you can restart the console from the menu.
Still not working? Try a hard reset, as described under “Reset the Kinect’s Connection” in
HowToGeek’s explainer.
If none of these work, you may need to get your device repaired through your warranty (or extended warranty).
Xbox Live Connection Issues
If you want to play Xbox games online, you will need a solid Xbox Live connection. Most connection issues stem from problems with your Internet connection itself. Try restarting your broadband modem or wireless router. If you’re connecting via wireless, consider connecting via LAN cable instead for increased speed and quicker ping times.
If you’re sure there’s nothing wrong with your Internet connection, your console may just need to be refreshed. Go into your settings and disconnect from your network, then reconnect. If you’re still having problems, there may be a problem with your console that needs to be repaired.
Disc Read Errors or Grinding Noises
One of the more common Xbox issues is with the disc drive. This isn’t surprising, as optical disc drives tend to be the weakest component in just about any device. As consoles age, you may start to encounter disc read errors.
One particularly scary issue is when your console starts making grinding noises when it tries to spin the game disc. It may sound like your console is destroying your valuable games, but thankfully that grinding sound doesn’t result in scratches on your discs. Instead it’s due to a weak or broken gear in the drive.
The good news is that this gear is replaceable. If you are comfortable with fairly involved DIY repairs, you
might be able to do it yourself. And certainly it’s an easy repair under your warranty. The bad news is once you start hearing grinding sounds, your console is unlikely to be able to play disc-based games at all until you get it fixed.
