Rumor Round-Up: Sony WH-1000XM5 Headphones

The 2020 Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones remain among the finest on today’s market. They still frequently top lists of the best models, even two years since their launch. Of course, newer headphones from various brands have come close. However, dollar-for-dollar, nobody is yet to match Sony in terms of its best-selling wireless, mic-equipped, over-ear model with noise cancellation.
And matching Sony may remain the name of the game. That’s because a successor from the brand appears to be on the horizon. This all-new pair of headphones from the market leader will likely receive the model number WH-1000XM5. So, what do we know about the proposed upcoming Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones? Rumors are rife, starting with a fall 2022 launch date.

Five Sony WH-1000XM5 Headphones Rumors Ahead of Launch

Already, there’s plenty to digest when it comes to Sony WH-1000XM5 rumors. Although the manufacturer hasn’t confirmed any details, there’s a reasonable weight to most of the rumors. It’s something that’s helped by Sony’s past consistency as far as previous headphone models from the same lineup are concerned.

Rumor #1: Sony WH-1000XM5 Headphones Launching in Fall 2022

The rumored Sony WH-1000XM5s look set to land this fall based on past launch dates. Their predecessors, the WH-1000XM4s, first appeared in fall 2020. Meanwhile, the model before that, Sony’s similarly popular WH-1000XM3s, arrived two years prior in fall 2018. On that basis, everything points toward the all-new Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones launching later this year – probably in August.

Rumor #2: Sony WH-1000XM5 Headphones to Cost $350

It’s almost unheard of for new tech to match the pricing of its predecessors in 2022. Take the latest iPhone SE, for example, and the refreshed Nintendo Switch OLED from last year. Both have seen price increases over the models they ultimately replace. From smartphones and game consoles to headphones and speakers, it’s at least partly down to the seemingly endless supply chain crunch.
Be that as it may, rumors currently point toward Sony maintaining the pricing of past models when it comes to the new WH-1000XM5 headphones. If that’s the case, they’ll cost the same as the still-available WH-1000XM4s, which have an MSRP of $349.99.

Rumor #3: The WH-1000XM5s Will Look… The Same

Sony is a creature of habit. It’s something reflected perfectly in a side-by-side look at the rumored WH-1000XM5 headphones’ predecessors. The previous two models look very much alike. In fact, color options aside, there’s almost nothing to tell them apart.
Prospective buyers should expect more of the same from the new model. And that’s by no means a bad thing. That’s because the currently available WH-1000XM4s aren’t just brilliant, but they remain an extremely handsome-looking pair of headphones as well.

Rumor #4: Better Battery Life for Sony’s WH-1000XM5s

While Sony’s new flagship wireless headphones may not look too different, that’s not to say there won’t be improvements. Patent filings and other supposedly leaked documents hint at a significantly improved battery life of around 40 hours. That’s ten hours more than buyers of the current model get. Sony may also look to simultaneously incorporate high-speed charging, which would be an added bonus.

Rumor #5: Superior Noise-Canceling Abilities

When Sony’s WH-1000XM4 headphones launched back in 2020, they brought with them active noise cancellation – something that was lacking from the then-current WH-1000XM3 model. In the two years since the launch of the current flagship, Sony has no doubt sought to refine its technology in this regard.
With that, the new Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones should offer superior noise-canceling abilities. Precisely how it’ll be superior remains to be seen. Still, it’s a point explicitly mentioned in the new model’s rumored patent, so there should be at least some improvement in store.
