Samsung recently announced yet another innovation in TV display technology:
micro LED. Curious what this is and how it might change the TV landscape in the future? Upsie’s here with what you need to know about this new technology and Samsung’s preposterously expensive new TV.
What Is Micro LED?
Micro LED is the latest innovation in screen display technology. It’s based on LED technology, but with micro LEDs, which have been shrunk considerably. Added to that, each individual LED can be controlled independently, leading to a mind-boggling level of display control.
The market has only just gotten accustomed to mini-LEDs, and it would be easy to assume that micro LEDs are the same thing or something similar. In reality, these two technologies are very different.
CNet explains that mini-LEDs use LEDs that are smaller than conventional, but not as small as the ones in a micro LED display. Additionally, mini-LED displays continue to rely on an LCD backlight panel to power the image.
Micro LED is different: the LEDs are individually controlled, and they power the image themselves. There are all sorts of technical hurdles to creating micro LED displays, and it’s a marvel that Samsung has done it at all.
Samsung’s Current Micro LED Offering
All this brings us to Samsung’s current offering. The company has offered micro LED displays the past couple years, but these have been commercial products that require custom installs. This year, Samsung announced a consumer model. This micro LED TV is a massive 110 inches in size, though the company has announced 88-inch and 99-inch versions coming later on.
Saying it’s an impressive device might be the understatement of the year. It looks amazing: like a massive OLED display, but bigger and brighter than OLED can ever be. You can tune in four separate picture sources at once, each displaying on 55 inches of screen real estate. There’s also no bezel or even a matrix. It’s all screen, and it’s all gorgeous.
The audio quality is amazing as well, with an embedded Majestic Sound System offering 5.1 channel sound plus audio object tracking.
Of course, all this new tech requires new processing power, and the Micro AI Processor provides 4K HDR content that looks amazing, displaying 100% RGB color gamut as well.
Pricing Remains Prohibitive
Micro LED displays are doing a lot. While your old LCD TV might have 12 or so LEDs powering it, a micro LED display has 25 million tiny LEDs. There are significant manufacturing and technological hurdles to getting this right, and it stands to reason that there will be a price premium.
That said, there are price premiums and then there’s what Samsung is asking for its current 2021 micro LED display. This beauty of a display will set you back
something like $156,000. Yes, that’s in thousands. This display costs more than most luxury cars, more even than a small house in some markets.
Still, if you’ve got the space for a 110-inch TV and disposable income aplenty, you can have the absolute latest and greatest in display technology later this year.
